Realistic Flame Magnum Revisited [Uh oh!]

So back in 2009 I painted my brother's Dodge Magnum with a realistic flame job on the front.  He was the victim of some unwanted front end damage.  The Magnum has a custom Kandy Kolor paint job.  It looks like Molly orange over metallic gold or silver.  Anyway, a custom Kandy paint job is major bucks and the insurance company will only pay so much.  So, it was the perfect opportunity to be creative.  Something unique that doesn't stick out and draw too much attention.  Realistic flames.

We used very little yellow so as to keep the flames more blended.  You can check out the full album of start to finish pictures here.

Nice huh?  A lot of work.  Just imagine...riding around town in a custom painted Dodge Magnum with a realistic flame job.  Turning all of the heads.  Getting smiles and nods.  Then one day you park and go into your favorite store and come out to find this...

The horror.  The insanity.  This isn't one of those jobs where you just sand, prime, repaint with the same color.  Nope, this is going to be a blending job.

So the first order was sanding down the damaged areas.  I cringed after each one as it went almost down to the plastic - ouch.

Next came laying out the base layer of flames.  These are the large ones.  Smaller, finer ones come later.

More blending layers.

Aaaand we're done.

Side by side before and after.

If only it would have taken the few minutes as it did to post these pictures!  But overall, I enjoyed doing it.  It was a challenge and it only made me that much more confident in my airbrushing skills.

House of Kolor paints:
Kandy Red
Kandy Molly Orange
Kandy Yellow

Clear coat and blending agents.

My final recommendation was to never let the Magnum leave the garage again.
